In our election-winning 2016 local manifesto, Labour promised to maximise the power of the council’s spending power in the local economy. Figures released this month show that, since the social value policy was implemented, Bristol City Council has invested more than one-third of spend in Bristol and a further eighth in the wider region.

These figures, encouraging given Preston’s baseline was just 14%, along with news that 40% of council procurement spend has been with SMEs, smashing our 25% target, show once again that Labour Bristol are showing the green shoots of municipal socialism. Revised procurement regulations are set to come before Full Council soon, further strengthening this Labour council’s commitment to local suppliers and Bristol’s economy.
