Plans to improve some of Bristol’s council housing estates, creating more better quality homes and enhancing local communities, have been approved by the council’s Labour administration.

Some of the council’s existing housing stock is past its expected life span, and is expensive to maintain and live in.

The programme will help deliver better homes for existing residents and additional new homes for those on the waiting list.

It would aim to target some of the city’s most challenging housing stock and where possible use council owned assets to bring about positive change that will benefit all residents.

Councillor Paul Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Housing is at the heart of improving the lives of people across the city. We want to raise the standard of homes that we offer to our tenants. This regeneration programme has the potential to transform neighbourhoods across the city, offering improved community facilities alongside better quality housing.

“Many of our current properties are expensive to live in and heat, and are not energy efficient, and through this regeneration programme, we want to tackle some of our most challenging estates.

“We are committed to building mixed and balanced communities, made up of high quality environmentally sustainable homes, including more affordable homes for local people. We want to create thriving communities where people actively choose to live.

“This development project will be part of the largest council homebuilding programme seen in the city for a generation.”

At this stage, no decisions have been taken on the future of any individual estate. Any developments considered for the programme, will be selected through an objective process and the housing team will fully engage with residents and work with them to co-design projects.

Bristol is also committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and the regeneration of our underperforming estates will be vitally important to help the city reach this target. Homes across the city must be made low-carbon, low energy and resilient to a changing climate.
