Families in Bristol are beginning to move into their new homes as the next phase of council housing nears completion.
The homes are part of Labour-run Bristol City Council’s New Build Programme, regenerating brownfield sites, to provide new high quality homes in key areas across the city.
Richeson Close in Henbury and Jersey Avenue in Broomhill are two further sites nearing completion and will deliver much needed social housing for residents in the city.
Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Making sure everyone in Bristol has access to suitable housing remains one of my top priorities and the completion of Richeson Close and Jersey Avenue is an important step towards meeting our ambitious housing targets.
“It is also particularly important that we build quality homes which can change people’s lives for the better. Decent housing is vital in order for people to thrive, and these two new sites will make a real difference to the 45 new families who will be able to call them home.”
Richeson Close will provide 32 new homes including one, two, three and four bed properties – and over 60% of tenants have already moved in. In addition, the Jersey Avenue development, once complete, will provide an additional 13 new homes.
The council is about to start work on phase four of the build programme, which will deliver 600 new homes across 15 sites. These are currently at the initial stages of planning or have just received planning consent.
It has also been confirmed that phase four will include the development of the former Filwood Cinema, with a full planning application scheduled to be submitted by the end of the year.
Councillor Paul Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Building new council housing and addressing the shortage of affordable accommodation in Bristol is a key priority.
“We are continuing to look at every opportunity to accelerate our build programme. We are aiming to deliver 600 new homes over the next three financial years, and to make sure this is viable we have taken the decision to build a mixture of units for social housing, Shared Ownership and market sale.
“We have also started to look at development sites for 2022 and beyond to make sure we continue to have new housing being completed every year.”
