Bristol Mayor, Marvin Rees has broken ground to signal the start of construction of 133 new homes in Ashton Vale. The innovative development will feature 40% social rent, and will see the council building houses for sale on the private market for the first time.
The mayor climbed on board a digger to break the ground on the former Alderman Moores site in Ashton Vale. The event, attended by Councillor Paul Smith (Cabinet member for Homes & Communities) and local Labour councillors Celia Phipps and Mark Bradshaw, marked the start of construction of the 133 new homes that will be known as Ashton Rise.
The development is the first of its kind for Bristol City Council. The proceeds from the private sales will be reinvested to support funding the construction of the 53 new council homes on the site. These new homes will form part of the council’s plans to increase the supply of new homes in the city, and in particular to help address the need for additional affordable homes.
Labour has set out the commitment of building 2,000 new homes – 800 affordable – a year by 2020. As part of this commitment we are not just looking at numbers, but also at the quality of housing and communities created.
Mayor Rees said: “The council house new build programme is an integral part of my commitment to increasing the number of new homes in the city. This scheme is the next phase of that programme, and a chance for us to start doing things differently.
“As I have made very clear, we cannot meet our ambitious targets on our own, so that is why we are working with partners, including Wilmott Dixon, who can help us make a real difference to the city.
“We want to create a balanced community at Ashton Rise, full of quality housing which can change people’s lives for the better. Decent housing is vital in order for people to thrive, and we are doing all we can to make sure new homes are being built all across the city. This development will make a real difference to the large number of families who will be able to call it home.”
The scheme is being delivered in partnership with a contractor who have committed to utilising a local supply chain, where possible, to deliver the scheme. In addition, they will be providing work experience and apprenticeship opportunities to ensure that the project delivers maximum value to the local community.
The 133 homes will be a mixture of 2, 3 and 4 bed houses, and 1 and 2 bedroom apartments. The scheme will be delivered over 114 weeks and is due to complete in Spring 2021.
