Labour’s push for democracy and transparency at Bristol City Council has resulted in changes to the council’s constitution:
- Blocking officers’ plans to raise the number of petition signatures needed to trigger a Full Council debate
- More time for the public and councillors to read important papers before council meetings
- Mayoral Commissions on equality getting the chance to report at Full Council, like the Youth Mayors already do
- Golden motions at Full Council meetings (which are guaranteed to be considred) being distributed fairly amongst all backbench councillors, rather than rotating between political groups
- All councillors being empowered to partake in recruitment efforts, not just ones on particular committees
- All scrutiny chair positions being given to the non-mayoral parties, improving democractic oversight and accountability
