Inspired by a discussion at Bishopsworth, Hartcliffe and Withywood Branch Labour Party, at this month’s Full Council, Councillor Mark Brain this month moved a motion in the wake of the Safer Bristol Partnership Multi-Agency Learning Review.

Mayor Marvin Rees has wholeheartedly apologised on behalf of the organisation for its failings around the 2013 murder of Mr Ebrahimi, and reaffirmed his commitment to tackling institutional racism and discriminatory behaviour both within the council and across the city. The Mayor confirmed that every effort will continue to be made to identify how the council needs to change and improve.

While the Independent Police Complaints Commission report saw four Avon & Somerset police officers dismissed, and two jailed, council procedures at the time found no cause for disciplinary action against individuals. January’s motion called for a further investigation and moves to ensure that the appropriate training is provided for all council staff in such positions. It was passed unanimously, with support from all four parties.
